      <![CDATA[I think if it was a 16th century English folk song, and I have no idea, it was probably about Soho in London, since New York wasn't even founded until the 17th Century, and SoHo (South of Houston street) wasn't called SoHo until the 1960s.

      <![CDATA[Alan Price of The Animals has pointed out that the song was originally a sixteenth-century English folk song about a Soho brothel, and that English emigrants took the song to America where it was adapted to its later New Orleans setting.[2]<br>

The oldest known existing recording is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley (with Gwen Foster) who recorded it for Vocalion Records in 1934.[3] Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch <br>
Ashley. <br>
<br>
So, there is no House of the Rising Sun in New Orleans that the song was written after.
