Another form of Occupy Wall Street, even if you don't join a credit union, take a look at small local banks.

As we saw, quick customer rebellion gets results. Now if we could just join forces and demand that our politicians curtail government excesses.

Re this: "And though monies in a credit union account don't have the same FDIC protection that a bank account carries, they are federally insured by a different government agency, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA)."

This is actually incorrect. Deposits in federally insured credit unions do have the same protection that federally insured bank deposits have.

And if the guy down the street swipes a CU card, or a community bank card, instead of one's self; does one think the retailer will charge them less for the good or service? Probably not, unless they start inspecting cards used, and charge different prices based on who's debit or credit card is in one's wallet.

As to how much they care or don't care; going to close BofA accounts sure did result in a lot of high pressure PR pitches, to try to convince me to stay....

It's important to keep in mind that credit unions may not be charging their customers any debit-related fees, but the fees they charge retailers accepting their debit cards are now much higher (83%, to be exact) than what big banks charge. The reason is that they were exempted from the Durbin Amendment.

So we should not be losing sight of the issue that got the whole thing started – the size of the interchange fees.
