My parents are both 'yankees' who moved to New Orleans before I was born and have lived there for over 30 years now.
Okay, let me give my local bona fides since no two people can have a disagreement about New Orleans without engaging in this tiresome practice:

I was born in Charity Hospital in 1969 to a Mother who was born in Hotel Dieu in 1942 to her mother who was an out-of-town-hipster-interloper born in Sicily in 1908 just months before her parents headed towards New Orleans.

Natives of New Orleans do not ask where you went to high school to judge and figure out the kind of person you are. This is a common misconception among newcomers to the city.

@RfrancisR From what I gathered in the second article, the neighborhood names presented in the '70s were mostly embraced by preservationists.

Since the names only came to be (or were revived, in the case of Faubourg Marigny) in the '70s, you can understand why no one I knew ever referred to them as Marigny, Bywater, etc. I was born in '85, parents in '42 and '51, grandparents in '16, '19, and '21. They were all adults when those names came into play.

And again, as RCP11189 said, it has a lot to do with where you were raised.

I've included excerpts from the second article, Campanella's "Where the Hell is Plum Orchard," which further exemplify the feelings of my associates and myself.

@Jake I'm glad you feel the same way as I. You're right, it is challenging to distinguish genuine visitors from gawkers. I also agree that it's very satisfying to open their eyes to the real New Orleans (or Mississippi, in your case).

As a part-time resident of the city, I feel a similar vibe as I do about my homestate of Mississippi. Willie Morris once talked about building a wall around the state and posting a "KEEP OUT" sign, not wanting to share the celebrated and diverse culture that is so specific and beautiful to the state (to those who truly understand it); however, not to allow others to see and share how very far the state has come (further than any other, I would argue) regarding race relations, artistic achievements, musical accomplishments and contributions to the country, etc., would be selfish and sinful.

I've only been here a mere decade, living exclusively in the Marigny/Bywater area (actually only in the ninth ward, as the little slice of the Marigny past Franklin to Press is actually the ninth ward), but my understanding is these neighborhoods have been called these names for a while, def pre-dating Katrina.
I also almost exclusively rode the number 88/89 and number 5 pre and immediately post Katrina, as I did not own a car until recently.
While it may be true that you are New Orleans native (something I would never dare claim to be), this writing *does* come off like Scott Glab suggests, even if that is not your intention at all.

Taking KA's comment a little further and thinking about it more, this is a study of much more than public transit. It's almost ethnography (with some sociology of course re: the passengers) using public transit as the vehicle to frame the study (pardon the pun).
