Nora McGunnigle on craft beer's ascendance in the Crescent City -- plus a full schedule of events
by Nora McGunnigle
Polly Watts, owner of the Avenue Pub, remembers that during New Orleans' first American Craft Beer Week (ACBW) in 2008, Harpoon Brewing sent six 12-ounce bottles of its Leviathan series double IPA (DIPA) for the bar to pour, and it was gone in 15 minutes. "Everyone was so excited to have a DIPA," Watts says, whose bar is on St. Charles Avenue, "and in 2008 it was the only one available in the entire city."…

When word got out that Carrollton Station (8140 Willow St., 504-865-9190; www.carrolltonstation.com) would be up for sale, former employees Michael and Colleen Miller left Steamboat Springs, Colo. and returned to New Orleans to purchase the bar and help restore it to its former glory. "We are doing everything we can to make some positive changes while still retaining the history that makes it a special place," owner-operator Michael Miller says.…

The chalkboard sidewalk sign outside St. Lawrence advertises an eye-catching burger. Inside, icy booze swirls in daiquiri dispensers behind the bar and the undersized kitchen pumps out the plates until 2 a.m.…

There's a certain intrigue in the long history and the labyrinthine warren of dining rooms, service bars and corridors at Arnaud's Restaurant (813 Bienville St., 504-523-5433; www.arnaudsrestaurant.com).   The French-Creole grande dame has been stoking that mystique lately with periodic "Speakeasy Dinners," which evoke the days of Prohibition when, according to restaurant lore, Arnaud's served bootleg liquor to guests in the know.…

New generation food trucks typically serve just a few specialized dishes, though lately they've been enlisted to serve a number of auxiliary purposes at the same time.   During its most recent racing season, for instance, the Fair Grounds Race Course and Slots routinely used food trucks to market nights at the track to a younger generation, and in April civic boosters in Jefferson Parish organized a food truck rally to promote a new image for the Fat City district.…

With a Ph.D. in business psychology, Carmelo Turillo was teaching in Madrid when he and wife Katrina Turillo devised a plan to open La Divina Gelateria (3005 Magazine St., 504-342-2634; 621 St. Peter St., 504-302-2692; Loyola University, Carrollton Hall, 504-258-2115; www.ladivinagelateria.com) based on the gelato shops they'd grown to love in Europe. They opened their original Magazine Street location in 2007 and later expanded, with two more local shops and another one planned for Baton Rouge this fall.…

The expanding variety of food in New Orleans isn't just about different ethnic cuisines and unconventional dining venues. The choices for vegetarians and vegans also are more expansive than ever, a major change for a city where seafood was once widely, and earnestly, proffered as a "meatless" option at restaurants.…

Along the staircase at Saints and Sinners (627 Bourbon St., 504-528-9307; www.saintsandsinnersnola.com), dozens of trompe l'oeil eyes peep through keyholes printed on the wallpaper. The watchful walkway is part of the bar's unique design, inspired by owner Keith Kurtz's fascination with Storyville.…

"One step up (from burger joints) are places with better ambience and perhaps better ingredients — Shake Shack, Five Guys, Starbucks, Pret a Manger — that also peddle unhealthful food but succeed in making diners feel better about eating it, either because it tastes better, is surrounded by some healthful options, the setting is groovier or they use some organic or sustainable ingredients. This is the Nouveau Junk sector."…

Ian McNulty goes for Italian in Bywater
by Ian McNulty
If New Orleans was not specifically pining for a modern coastal Italian dining experience in a refurbished industrial space at the Marigny/Bywater border, you wouldn't know it by the diners filling Mariza.   Mariza's dining room glows at candlelight wattage but seems to pulse with its own energy.…

Co-Founder of Liuzza's by the Track

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival inspires countless personal rituals, and one many people share is a visit to Liuzza's by the Track (1518 N. Lopez St., 504-218-7888; www.facebook.com/liuzzas), a tavern near the Fair Grounds Race Course and Slots known for its gumbo and barbecue shrimp po-boys. Though the building had long been a bar, its culinary reputation accrued after Billy Gruber and business partner Jimmy Lemarie bought it in 1996.…
