CNN: Lack of communication aboard Carnival Triumph = Hurricane Katrina

Last night I saw a bloated vessel filled with crap dock in Mobile, Ala. — but enough about CNN. The story, of course, was the arrival of the Carnival cruise ship Triumph, which had an engine failure that stranded it in the Gulf of Mexico and turned it into the Good Ship Lollipoop for a few days.

But for CNN's Martin Savidge, the lack of communication aboard the ship was equivalent to the lack of communication on the ground in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and the levee failures ...…

A benefit for Times-Picayune employees — and 60 Minutes is in town

In less than three weeks, The Times-Picayune will have become a three-day-a-week newspaper, and dozens of the paper's employees will be out of a job. The group DashThirtyDash, an assistance fund for the paper's unemployed workers, will be having a benefit Sept. 29 at Howlin' Wolf to raise money — but the group has begun an online auction with prizes including set visits and meet-and-greets with Anderson Cooper, Soledad O'Brien, Ellen DeGeneres and David Gregory (who knew there were set visitors and meet-and-greets on Meet the Press?).…

Michael Brown, who bounced from a job as an incompetent FEMA chief to a job in Denver as Mainstream Media Radio Host Who is Well-Compensated for Railing Against Mainstream Media, used that mighty brainpan of his over the weekend and ferreted out Mainstream Media Bias when it came to Hurricane Isaac:

... which might have made a better point if CNN and Anderson Cooper weren't here, or if CNN hadn't done the story on power outages before Brownie raised the question, and followed it with another one today.

As for O'Brien, she had already been covering Isaac for more than a week.…

WWL-TV has obtained a copy of the letter sent to Steven Newhouse yesterday by Tom Benson — owner of the New Orleans Saints, the New Orleans Hornets and WVUE-TV — indicating Benson's interest in purchasing The Times-Picayune.

In the letter, Benson writes, "I would welcome the opportunity to speak to you about my interest in purchasing The Times-Picayune, with others.…

NOLA Media Group un-lays off some people; and new departures at The Times-Picayune

Facing the departures of at least six experienced reporters in the next two weeks, executives at the new NOLA Media Group have changed course and offered jobs to several of the staffers who had previously been told they would not be invited to join the new company.

Sources in the newsroom say those reporters who were un-laid off in recent days include Benjamin Alexander-Bloch, Paul Purpura and Mark Waller. At least two have indicated they will accept the new company’s offer.…
