Last night I saw a bloated vessel filled with crap dock in Mobile, Ala. — but enough about CNN. The story, of course, was the arrival of the Carnival cruise ship Triumph, which had an engine failure that stranded it in the Gulf of Mexico and turned it into the Good Ship Lollipoop for a few days.

But for CNN's Martin Savidge, the lack of communication aboard the ship was equivalent to the lack of communication on the ground in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and the levee failures ...…

While many of the big parties are either invite-only or sold out, there's a four-day festival in Woldenberg Park that starts tonight, with dozens of local bands, food booths and other fun — and admission is free.…

Last night on WWL-TV's 10 p.m. news, Scott Satchfield spoke to Gambit editor Kevin Allman about Mayor Mitch Landrieu's attempt to crowdsource the wisdom of the city's Twitter community for the benefit of Super Bowl visitors under the hashtag #BestofNOLA. (And speaking of Twitter: Satchfield is @Satchfield, while Kevin is @NOLAKevin.)
…

If The Times-Picayune was anticipating a negative piece about the paper's cutbacks on tonight's 60 Minutes — and it seemed like it was — it really had nothing to fear. Morley Safer's report — most of which was taped months ago — was a breezy, evenhanded look at the "digital transition" at the new NOLA Media Group.…

Last summer, during the protests over The Times-Picayune becoming a thrice-weekly newspaper, 60 Minutes man Morley Safer visited New Orleans to do a report on the paper. Jim Romenesko confirms this morning that the segment will air this Sunday, though so far there's nothing up on the CBS News site about it.…

Attention dumbass kids: Now you can salute your favorite sports hero while smoking some God-knows-what synthetic drug from your local ratchet gas station or skanky mini-mall head shop.

First it was mojo, then bath salts, and now it's a little bag of "aromatherapy" called "Blue Brees."

From WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge:

A Louisiana mother has a warning for other parents after her teenage son had a bad reaction from smoking what she's calling a new synthetic drug.…

In less than three weeks, The Times-Picayune will have become a three-day-a-week newspaper, and dozens of the paper's employees will be out of a job. The group DashThirtyDash, an assistance fund for the paper's unemployed workers, will be having a benefit Sept. 29 at Howlin' Wolf to raise money — but the group has begun an online auction with prizes including set visits and meet-and-greets with Anderson Cooper, Soledad O'Brien, Ellen DeGeneres and David Gregory (who knew there were set visitors and meet-and-greets on Meet the Press?).…

Michael Brown, who bounced from a job as an incompetent FEMA chief to a job in Denver as Mainstream Media Radio Host Who is Well-Compensated for Railing Against Mainstream Media, used that mighty brainpan of his over the weekend and ferreted out Mainstream Media Bias when it came to Hurricane Isaac:

... which might have made a better point if CNN and Anderson Cooper weren't here, or if CNN hadn't done the story on power outages before Brownie raised the question, and followed it with another one today.

As for O'Brien, she had already been covering Isaac for more than a week.…

Facing the departures of at least six experienced reporters in the next two weeks, executives at the new NOLA Media Group have changed course and offered jobs to several of the staffers who had previously been told they would not be invited to join the new company.

Sources in the newsroom say those reporters who were un-laid off in recent days include Benjamin Alexander-Bloch, Paul Purpura and Mark Waller. At least two have indicated they will accept the new company’s offer.…

When it comes to his vice-presidential ambitions, Gov. Bobby Jindal's standard response is "I have the job I want" — even as he's traveled the country raising millions for himself. Most political watchers expected Jindal to pivot on that position eventually, and that moment came this morning on Meet the Press with David Gregory, when Gregory asked if Jindal might be GOP candidate Mitt Romney's veep.…

Rob Nelson worked at The Times-Picayune for seven years before moving to WWL-TV and then ABC World News Now. This morning, during World News Now's "Morning Papers" segment, he talked about the upcoming cutbacks at the T-P, calling them "a hurtful and damaging decision for the city" and slamming the Newhouse "corporate beancounters" as he got more and more wound up about the fate of the paper.…

For weeks now, local sports reporters have spent an inordinate amount of time during New Orleans Hornets games discussing the team's seasonal mascot, King Cake Baby. Now WWL-TV's Bradley Handwerger gets to the bottom of the matter — up close and personal with KCB itself — in a very funny segment of Fourth Down on Four:
