Gray ahead in fundraising, Badon has more cash in campaign fund

James Gray, candidate for New Orleans City Council District E in the Dec. 8 runoff election, raised $49,365 in campaign contributions from mid-October to mid-November, compared to $39,700 in contributions to his opponent State Rep. Austin Badon. Badon, however, ended the period with more cash on hand, nearly $11,000 to just under $4,000 for Gray, according to campaign finance reports filed yesterday with the Louisiana Ethics Administration.…

Three local State House candidates fail to file income disclosures by deadline

Two Orleans Parish candidates running in the October 22 election for the Louisiana State House of Representatives are nearly a month late in filing tier 2 personal financial disclosure forms for the 2010 tax year, as required of all candidates for the State Legislature, according to Kathleen Allen, administrator for the Louisiana Ethics Administration.

Democrat Carlos Williams, who is challenging Democratic incumbent Jeff Arnold for District 102 in Algiers; and Republican John Fenner "Fenn" French, who is challenging incumbent Neil Abramson for District 98 Uptown, have not, as of this writing, turned in the disclosures, which were due by the middle of September.…

Americans loathe Congress, but they still like President Barack Obama according to a recent Associated Press poll. A mere 22 percent support Congress while public approval for Obama’s job performance checks in at 53 percent even though Karl Rove casts the president as “undisciplined.”

The poll also reveals that party affiliation doesn’t inspire confidence — 50 percent of those surveyed would give a pink slip to their congressperson.…

Tonight's Cao health-care town hall

Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao held his first of four health care town hall meetings tonight at the regular neighborhood association meeting of the Irish Channel Christian Fellowship on First Street. More than 100 people turned out to hear the congressman and ask questions, but the tenor -- while tense at times -- was largely free of the rancor at so many other health care town halls this heated season.

Cao won points from the crowd by taking questions by a lottery system, rather than having them prescreened (as Sen. David Vitter has been doing at his town halls).

Judging from the random questions, the crowd was pro-health care reform and skeptical about Cao's commitment to the cause.…

Jindal veto on NOAH: Fallout for Cao

Gov. Bobby Jindal’s veto of state funding for New Orleans Adolescent Hospital (NOAH) has put pressure on fellow Republican U.S. Rep. Anh “Joseph” Cao to address the projected Sept. 1 closing of the mental health facility.

One day after Jindal’s June 30 veto of $14.2 million for NOAH, activists passed out leaflets at a Mid-City health care fair -- hosted by Cao –- urging the congressman to support keeping the 35-bed hospital Uptown.

Cao said that he asked Jindal Administration officials if NOAH could remain in New Orleans if $4.5 million in federal funds could be found to plug the state funding shortfall for NOAH (which the governor put at $5.8 million). “They did not make a commitment,” Cao said of state health officials.

The congressman added that earlier in the week he asked a City Park "roundtable" of area hospital executives if they could accommodate more mental health beds.…

U.S. Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao, R-New Orleans, said Wednesday he is likely to vote for the economic stimulus bill when it comes to a vote, probably today or Friday, even if he is the only Republican member of the House to do so.
