A Different Woman

In 1925, a school marm from western Texas sits down to write her autobiography. It's published in France, but it's a small run of 1,000 copies. In it she discusses incest (her brothers), bestiality (her brothers again) and other inflammatory topics like socialism. All hell breaks loose and the book is banned, seized and destroyed. The school marm, now living in England, is villified, arrested and finally expelled from the country. The remarkable woman's name is Gertrude Beasley and precious few copies of her book still exist. Actress/playwright Veronica Russell, who also grew up in Texas, discovered the Beasley saga quite by chance in an anthology of Lone Star literature. So began a fascination that resulted in Russell's solo show A Different Woman. She developed the piece in a year's worth of workshops here and -- with director Perry Martin -- took it to the International Fringe Festival in New York City to very positive reviews. Russell is one of our most talented actresses and her presentation of this forgotten heroine is full of dark, offbeat humor.Ê-- Dalt Wonk
