Twenty minutes from downtown New Orleans, nestled into the wetlands stretching beyond Patterson Road on the West Bank, is a Tulane University program that's anything but a satellite campus. A Studio in the Woods hosts an artist community embedded in its environment, both literally and figuratively. It's a wilderness retreat and outdoor classroom, teeming with wildlife, and its campus includes art studios, a main house, dorms, a pond and a treehouse. A boardwalk snakes through the studios, linking the bottomland hardwood forest interior to the Mississippi River. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 5, the studio (13401 Patterson Road) opens to the public to celebrate FORESTival, with live music and theater performances, art, food, auctions and more.
