Alternative Media Expo

This fifth edition of the Alternative Media Expo, sponsored by the local alt-culture rag Antigravity, is gathering together more than 50 creators and purveyors of strange music, obscure books, peculiar art, independent films and hip handmade crafts under one roof for your evening shopping pleasure. The event is modeled after media trade-show gatherings like comic book conventions, with the twist that every vendor is strictly independent, D.I.Y. and at least a little bit punk rock in their efforts, which allows artists and craftspeople who don't distribute their wares through mainstream channels to network like real grown-up businessmen and women. Expect to see small-press literature, underground comic books, handmade clothing, jewelry and accessories from the political to the frivolous to the downright bizarre represented from all over the country. Local vendors of note include the dons and capos of one of the event's sponsors, the New Orleans Craft Mafia, the Iron Rail Collective bookstore, underground graffiti-influenced poster art from 504 What Style, and the event's special guest, TremŽ writer Mat Schwartzman (pictured), author of The Beginner's Guide to Community Based Arts. The first 250 attendees will receive a swag bag lovingly packed by the New Orleans Craft Mafia. Tickets $5. -- Alison Fensterstock
