Annee de la Cajun

Voluntary "identity" cards

State lawmakers have a penchant this session for all things Cajun and French. Already passed is a resolution designating July 14 (Bastille Day) as an annual commemorative day for French-American Creole families, and another bill adding "I'm Cajun" to drivers licenses. Also close to passage during the session's final days was legislation adding the same phrase, plus "I'm Creole" to license plates and one more allowing parishes to adopt bilingual signs on highways. The only initiative that failed was a push to produce bilingual birth certificates. — JEREMY ALFORD
