Banned Book Week

With his novel, Not Enough Indians, set for release this month, maybe humorist, and voice of many of the characters on The Simpsons, Harry Shearer is hedging his bets. He's hosting a Banned Book Reading party at the House of Blues to kick off local observance of the American Library Association's (ALA) Banned Book Week (Sept. 23-30). Local authors and celebrities will read from the best parts of banned and challenged books. The ALA tracks book challenges, events in which peole request that a title or author be removed from a library's shelves. Banned books are ones that are actually removed. In the past 15 years, the most challenged writers include Maya Angelou, John Steinbeck, Stephen King, Judy Blume and J.K. Rowling and her Harry Potter series. J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye made the top of the 2005 list, along with Judy Blume's Forever and Robert Cormier's The Chocolate War. Sex education books also frequently make the list. The Jefferson and Orleans Parish libraries along with the ACLU, the New Orleans Gulf South Booksellers and Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center are sponsoring the event. The Jefferson Parish Library system will feature exhibits on banned books throughout the week and hold a quiz contest to see who knows the most about such controversial titles. For more information on banned and challenged books visit www.ala.org/bbooks. All events are free. --ÊWill Coviello
