Beer News

When many New Orleanians think of Oktoberfest, the first thing that comes to mind is Deutsches Haus. Founded in 1928, the German heritage club has hosted traditional Oktoberfest celebrations for decades. When it lost its original location on South Galvez Street in Mid-City (pictured) due to construction of the LSU/VA medical center, the organization relocated to Metairie while it raises funds to build a new facility in New Orleans.

Deutsches Haus' Oktoberfest celebration runs three weekends (Oct. 11-12, 18-19 & 25-26) at Kenner's Rivertown (415 Williams Blvd.). Festivities include German food, a wide selection of traditional German beer, oompah music, dachshund races, tastings of European wines and other events. Oktoberfest hours are 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays. For information and tickets, visit www.oktoberfestnola.com.

Several local businesses also mark Oktoberfest with special foods and dinners.

Dat Dog (www.datdognola.com) will host an Oktoberfest-themed dinner with traditional German beers and American beers brewed in German and harvest styles on. The dinner will be Oct. 24 at Dat Dog's Magazine Street location (3336 Magazine St.). Call 504-324-2226 for information.

Crescent City Brewhouse (527 Decatur St., 504-522-0571; www.crescentcitybrewhouse.com) offers a three-course Oktoberfest menu during October. The special costs $32 and beer pairings are not included, but Brewhouse staff will recommend beer pairings with each course. Crescent City Brewhouse's Oktoberfest beer is a filtered copper lager, lightly hopped, with a hint of smokiness. — NORA MCGUNNIGLE
