Between the Lions

Big cat Theo and cub Leona will try to stir up a little local pride this week in appearances at several area locations. The stars of the popular PBS show Between the Lions both entertain and encourage children to get excited about reading. The events include performances, read-alouds and a chance for children to meet the lions. For those unfamiliar with the show, the 7-year-old program playfully incorporates literacy skills in an ongoing story about a family of lions, with cubs aged 4 and 7. A Motown-modeled back-up singing group called the Vowelles adds music to the mix, and Click the Mouse provides a link to the Internet content on the Web site ( The show airs locally on the Public Broadcasting stations WYES-TV and WLAE. -- Will Coviello 6:30 p.m. Thu., Sept. 6
