May 6

5 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Wednesday

Lafayette Square Park, 600 St. Charles Ave.; www.wednesdayatthesquare.com

Big Sam's Funky Nation headlines this free concert, but get there early to hear the soul sounds of Charles Walker and the Dynamites. Walker got his start at the same time as Etta James and James Brown and recorded soul songs for the Chess and Decca labels. Now backed by the big horns of the 10-piece Dynamites band, he's enjoying a renaissance in the new soul revival.
