Hey Blake,
Where can I find a picture of Lakeside Mall when it was first built in 1960?
Debra Guarneri
Dear Debra,
Your question is connected to the one above, because Lakeside Shopping Center was developed by the same Paul Kapelow who built the Claiborne Towers. Construction began in 1958 when today's Veterans Memorial Boulevard was just a shell road and the site was surrounded by cow pastures. It was the first shopping mall in Louisiana.
The single-level, 431,700-square-foot complex opened for business on March 22, 1960, and included D.H. Holmes, Godchaux's and J.C. Penney.
There is a website where you can find many pictures of Lakeside Shopping Center at http://mall-hall-of-fame.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html.
Kapelow also founded Terrytown, a 6,000-home unincorporated community in Jefferson Parish on the West Bank, and he named some of the streets after people who were important to him. Terry Parkway and Carol Sue Avenue are named for his two daughters.
