Mother Teresa of Calcutta stayed with the Sisters of the Holy Family at their convent on Chef Menteur Highway when she visited New Orleans in 1976. July marks the 40th anniversary of her first visit to the city. In 1976, Mother Teresa spoke to the Catholic Daughters of America convention here. She spent the night on the campus of St. Michael Special School in the Irish Channel. In 1984, Mother Teresa returned to New Orleans and spoke at the World's Fair, the Roosevelt Hotel and the University of New Orleans. Earlier this year, Pope Francis announced that she will be named a saint in September.
