BOMB Fest New Orleans presents: The Roots of Music Fundraiser

In late 2009, the Roots of Music survived a budget crisis. With little funding in winter, program faculty worked overtime without pay to ensure its more than 100 students could stay enrolled in the music program. Facing another budget shortfall this spring, the Roots of Music hosts a fundraiser featuring the Rebirth Brass Band (pictured), Free Agents Brass Band and the Stooges Music Group, among others. Founded in 2007 by Rebirth drummer Derrick Tabb, the Roots of Music provides free after-school music instruction, tutoring, meals, transportation and more for at-risk students ages 9 to 14. The program enrolls more than 100 students from low-income families, many of which are single-parent households, and 86 percent of its students attend public schools. Its marching band, directed by Tabb and an all-star lineup of New Orleans musicians, marched in six parades in its second Mardi Gras season. Tickets $15. — Alex Woodward
