Bonnie "Prince" Billy and the Cairo Gang with Hurray For the Riff Raff

Alynda Lee called it "totally New Orleans" — the chance meeting at a Marigny breakfast joint with one of her musical heroes, Will Oldham of Palace and Bonnie "Prince" Billy. A year and several emails after putting her debut album in Oldham's hands at the Cake Cafe, Lee's boxcar band Hurray For the Riff Raff (which self-released its second LP, Young Blood Blues, in January) is his lead-in for this appropriately acoustic, no-microphones gig at antebellum Preservation Hall, the first of two Louisiana shows she's opening for the alt-country icon. Oldham's prolificacy and propensity for collaboration conspire to undermine his image as a lone wolf howling at the moon. His 15 albums in 12 years as Bonnie "Prince" Billy are filled with worthy foils, from Chicago post-rock instrumentalists Tortoise to Louisville bluegrass ensemble the Picket Line. The Wonder Show of the World, released this week on Drag City, is a spare showdown of frail tenors with longtime backer Emmett Kelly (Cairo Gang). Tickets $15. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
