NOPD Chief Warren Riley

blamed a former police captain, Danny Lawless, for the fact that $19,000 was missing from the department's evidence room — even though Lawless had tried to warn Riley about the problems. Lawless, who was in charge of the evidence room when the missing funds were secured there, showed The Times-Picayune weekly memos he had sent to top NOPD brass noting the evidence room's lax security, staffing shortages and a request for a meeting with Riley. The meeting never occurred.

Captain Leatrice Warren,

formerly the highest-ranking campus security officer at Southern University in New Orleans, used marked police cars and drivers to perform personal errands while on the clock, claimed 1,900 hours of overtime pay for herself from 2006-2008 and committed other infractions, according to a state inspector general's report. The report recommended that Warren be fired. After the report was issued, Warren resigned.
