Sarah Devlin

received a $10,000 cash scholarship as a gold medalist in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Devlin, an 18-year-old student at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), won for her original films. Her work will be spotlighted at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City, and Devlin will be honored at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in June.

Angela Hill

received the Golden Mike award from the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters March 29 at a ceremony in Baton Rouge. The award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to Louisiana and to the field of broadcasting. A legendary figure in New Orleans news, Hill on April 6 will celebrate her 37th anniversary at WWL-TV, where she currently reports for and co-anchors the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts.

Cast members of The Lion King

will perform at the Joy Theater April 9 as a benefit for the United Way of Southeast Louisiana. The revue, consisting of 18 musical numbers and spoken-word pieces from the show, will be hosted by local actor John "Spud" McConnell and also will feature performances by Theresa Andersson and the Mudhoney Dance Collective.

Jason Giroir,

the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) officer who was assigned to desk duty after the fatal shooting of Justin Sipp on March 1, resigned from the NOPD March 27 after being suspended pending an internal investigation of comments he left on the WWL-TV website. In response to the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida, Giroir – who was still under investigation for the Sipp shooting — had left the message "Act Like a Thug Die like one!"
