awarded a $175,000 grant to the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH) for expanding LEH's program "Prime Time Family Reading Time in Central City New Orleans." LEH estimates 450 children under age 10, along with their parents and guardians, will participate in the reading program.
owner of the NFL Champion Baltimore Ravens, donated two new Harley-Davidson FLHP motorcycles to the New Orleans Police Department to publicly thank the city for its hospitality during Super Bowl XLVII. Jacoby Jones, the Ravens' wide receiver and a New Orleans native, presented the choppers.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund
presented the Tulane Cancer Center with a $100,000 grant to continue research on genetic instability in lung cancer. Yow, the women's basketball coach at North Carolina State University, died from the disease four years ago. The fund benefits organizations fighting cancers in women.
the former purchasing director for the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, pleaded guilty in federal court March 13 to conspiracy to commit bribery. Prosecutors had accused Sens of taking cash and gifts from contractors who were hired to perform work at Orleans Parish Prison. Sens is scheduled to be sentenced June 12. He could receive a five-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $250,000.
