The Archdiocese of New Orleans
collected more than $500,000 for people in the Philippines recovering from Typhoon Haiyan. The Archdiocese will send a portion of the funds to the international relief organization Catholic Relief Services, which has distributed more than 40,000 temperature-resistant tarps for roofing in the country.
Keep Louisiana Beautiful,
a statewide anti-litter organization, granted $6,300 to Lower 9th Ward-based volunteer organization Common Ground Relief. The grant funds three litter and debris cleanups in January and February. Since 2005, more than 45,000 volunteers have worked with Common Ground on wetlands projects, home building, job training and other services.
Adams and Reese
law firm donated $2,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana as part of its annual holiday giving initiative. Second Harvest serves 240 organizations throughout 23 parishes across Louisiana, providing food for more than 260,000 people each year.
pleaded guilty Dec. 12 to embezzling $17,000 in federal funds from grants she was in charge of administrating. According to an investigation by Lee Zurik for WVUE-TV, Sumas pocketed payments that she falsely reported were going to dummy companies at New Orleans Regional Business Park in New Orleans East.
