The NBA Cares Community Caravan

held more than 30 community service events in New Orleans during the NBA All-Star weekend. NBA players and volunteers helped build six homes in Algiers and a playground at KIPP New Orleans Leadership Academy, among other service projects. Since October 2005, NBA Cares has raised more than $230 million for charity and provided more than 2.8 million hours of community service.

The Foundation for Louisiana

awarded grants of $4,000 each to the neighborhood groups Faubourg St. Roch Improvement Association, Lower 9th Ward Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development, New Zion City Preservation Association and Voices of Experience. The grants are part of the foundation's annual Together initiative, which aims to strengthen community engagement.

Uptown Music Theatre

students received the Freddie G. Award for Outstanding Production at the 2014 Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta in January. The student theater group was among nine U.S. schools to receive the honor. Uptown Musical Theatre performed 101 Dalmatians Kids and Fiddler on the Roof Jr.

Rafael Dobard and Quincy Jones,

two former New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) narcotics unit officers, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court Feb. 14 to wire fraud and theft. The 4th District officers admitted to falsifying timesheets for hours worked at security jobs and to conspiring to steal money from confidential informants. Dobard and Jones face up to 25 years in prison and $500,000 in fines. Sentencing is set for June 19.
