celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, and the James Beard Foundation named the Tchoupitoulas Street sno-ball stand an American Classic Feb. 28. Ashley Hansen — granddaughter of founders Mary and Ernest Hansen — now runs the business and will receive the honor at a ceremony in New York May 5.
The Humane Society of Louisiana
reintroduced its TransPUPtation program this month to take 27 rescued dogs to be adopted into homes in the Northeast. The program stopped last year when the charity's van broke down. First Bank and Trust helped raise funds for another vehicle as well as travel costs and pet health care. The Humane Society of Louisiana began TransPUPtation to meet the demand for rescued pets in the Northeast.
was named a Louisiana Main Street, a program under the wing of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, at an event March 11. It is the first Main Street designation in Jefferson Parish. The program provides an annual $5,000 grant for events in the Rivertown corridor.
The Terrebonne Parish Library
received the Upstart Innovation Award from the Public Library Association for its support of Future Leaders of America's Gulf, a library-based multimedia program that helps young people learn about environmental and community health issues in south Louisiana. The library also received a $2,000 prize. It's the second-ever Louisiana library to receive the award — Calcasieu Parish won in 2010.
