Savannah Logan,

a senior at Loyola University New Orleans, was awarded a 2014-15 Fulbright U.S. Student Award. Logan will join Fulbright's English Teaching Assistantship in Madrid, Spain, where she will teach English and tutor at an after-school program. The St. Croix, Virgin Islands native is a double major in computational math and modern languages and cultures, a member of the University Honors Program, and president of Alpha Sigma Nu.

Jenga Mwendo,

founder and director of the Backyard Gardener's Network, received Ebony magazine's annual Hero Next Door award, which recognizes 10 people helping communities throughout the U.S. The Backyard Gardener's Network offers free gardening and cooking workshops, children's activities and other events and maintains the Guerilla Garden and Ernst Garden in the Lower 9th Ward.

Darrell Bourque

was named the recipient of the 2014 Louisiana Writer Award from the State Library of Louisiana and its Louisiana Center for the Book. The poet — a whose collections include Plainsongs and The Doors Between Us, among others — will receive the award at an event Nov. 1 during the Louisiana Book Festival.

Jamie Whaley,

while serving his third term as elected police chief of Brusly, pleaded guilty in Louisiana District Court April 18 to using a town-issued credit card to purchase $1,120 in gasoline for his personal truck and boat. He receives a $1,000 monthly vehicle allowance from the town. He faces 18 months' supervised probation — and he intends to run for police chief again in 2016.
