The environmental lobby doesn't have much traction in the realm of popular music. More than a spoonful of sugar is needed to get twentysomething clubgoers to swallow sermons like "It takes a lot of nerve to destroy this wondrous Earth," a line from Bowerbirds' 2007 debut, Hymns For a Dark Horse. Accordingly, the Raleigh, N.C., band (singer/guitarist Phil Moore, singer/accordionist Beth Tacular, and rotating drummers and string-bowers) wraps its National Geographic tutorials in the sweetest possible neo-folk trappings. Moore's lilting, soporific tenor has all the vocal grace of a young Cat Stevens, but his best hooks often come without the burden of words. Hymns highlight "In Our Talons" turns the calls of the group's namesake into a dizzying series of "deet-deet-deet"s, and the best moments on July's Upper Air (Dead Oceans) — lovely lullabies "Silver Clouds" and "Ghost Life" — rely on little more than a series of undulating "ah"s and "oh"s. Durham trio Megafaun rounds out the North Carolina folk fest. Tickets $10. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
