With a cigarette in one tattooed hand, Adem Vant Hull looks more like a rock star than a carpenter. But as he brushes the sawdust off a stool in the small blue shed that serves as his workshop, it's obvious that Vant Hull is in his element.
"[When I started] I had nothing but a drill gun. I didn't know the first thing about it, just started showing up and working for free," the 26-year-old says. "I fell in love with it." Today, Vant Hull is the proud owner of Lucille Furniture (1173 Magazine St., 504-377-8458), where he spends the majority of his time: "[It's] all I do ... I'm out here from eight in the morning to 11 at night. My wife hates it!"
All that dedication is about to pay off at Vant Hull's upcoming show, Sawdust. "It's 30-some-odd pieces that I made. I designed everything, start to finish," he says. "I wanted to make something that nobody has ever seen before." Sawdust will feature pieces from $600 chairs to a $4,500 bed, as well as Vant Hull's original artwork and demonstrations. All attendees will receive custom magnets made from wood scraps.
"I just really want [everyone] to see it," Vant Hull says. "'Cause I really want to see it too." — Polly Sawabini
