Buttons and Bose

An easy-to-use desktop system combines the quality sound of Bose and the convenience of iPod.

Music lovers, iPod aficionados and connoisseurs of modern-looking, technologically advanced gadgets should marvel at the well-designed, high-quality sound and convenience of the new Bose SoundDock digital music system for iPods.

The self-contained unit has a sleek, white housing in keeping with the iPod designs, measures less than a foot wide, is just under 7 inches high and 6 1/2 inches deep and weighs less than 5 pounds. All you have to do for set-up is plug the power cord into an electrical outlet, place your iPod -- it also works with an iPod Mini -- into the cradle in the center of the speaker system and push the "play" button. In addition to playing your iPod library through a Bose music system, the SoundDock charges your iPod whenever it is docked, even while it is playing music. The new Bose system works with third- and fourth-generation iPods.

Bose has incorporated an acoustic design that delivers clear, full sound across the musical spectrum, and a patented, integrated signal-processing system automatically adjusts tonal balance to ensure a natural sound regardless of the volume. Amplifiers, equalizers and speakers within the integrated system are matched so users don't have to make adjustments in order to get the best acoustic sound from whatever type of music you choose to play. The output of all frequencies is balanced by an electronic equalization system that constantly provides balanced tones and sound clarity, and audio accuracy is ensured by digital signal-processing circuitry. The design promises to bring to life subtleties in the music that were undetectable under most playback systems. The speakers are shielded to prevent interference from television and computer pictures so you can place the system wherever you please.

The unit comes with a simple infrared remote control unit that can make changes from across the room, but the iPod and SoundDock also can be operated without the remote. In addition, you still have access to all the iPod's functions when it is docked, and the SoundDock has a one-button volume control.

The SoundDock package includes the speaker unit, a remote control, power cord, power pack and five dock inserts to accommodate the various iPod models. It retails for $299 and is available at Best Buy, CompUSA (8855 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, 468-3838), Apple retail stores or from Bose (800-444-2673; www.bose.com).
