Bywater

BYWATER BAR-B-QUE
3162 Dauphine St., 944-4445 This place isn't for the faint of appetite. The barbecue menu lets you choose your meat — ribs, chicken, pulled pork or beef brisket — two sides and French bread or jalapeno corn bread. Of course you can always get two meats, or three, or, for members of the Saint's offensive line, four meats. There also are a variety of sandwiches, salads, soups as well as pizza. No reservations. Lunch and dinner daily. Cash only. $

CAFÉ UNIQUE
2529 Dauphine St., 948-8884 The menu changes daily at this affordable Marigny eatery, offering soulful goodness every day of the workweek. Red beans are traditionally served on Monday, but the menu also includes spaghetti with meat sauce, stewed or fried chicken, pork chops and candied yams. Equally savory options roll out the rest of the week. No reservations. Breakfast and lunch Mon.-Fri. Cash only. $

ELIZABETH'S
601 Gallier St., 944-9272
Though Elizabeth's has changed ownership several times in the last few years, its philosophy remains the same: "Real food, done real good." The specialty breakfast items remain, but Elizabeth's now stays open to serve dinner and cocktails into the evening. No reservations. Breakfast and lunch Tue.-Fri., dinner Sat., brunch Sat.-Sun. Credit cards. $

JACK DEMPSEY'S
738 Poland Ave., 943-9914
Broiled and fried seafood have made this Bywater neighborhood restaurant an institution for 26 years. The décor is very casual and one can read the menu notices posted on the walls. Order Dungeness crab, king crab legs or broiled redfish, catfish or fried frog legs. Many seafood dishes come au gratin in hot, gooey cheesy. Popular side dishes include baked macaroni. No reservations. Lunch and dinner Tue.-Sun. Cash only. $$

THE JOINT
801 Poland Ave., 949-3232
"Always smoking'" is the motto of this homegrown barbecue operation and they aren't kidding. The rack of ribs comes out of the smoker savory and delicious, with juicy, well-seasoned meat falling off the bone. They will give you napkins but you probably will prefer to lick your fingers clean. The pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw is another popular choice. Catering is available. No reservations. Lunch Mon.-Sat. dinner Wed.-Sat. Credit cards. $
