Bookish charm comes as naturally to Camera Obscura as breathing. The well-read Scottish quintet has added a new shade of swoon to each of its scarved, bespectacled and argyle-sweatered albums, from the yearning, little-heard 2001 debut Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi (featuring production by Belle and Sebastian frontman and fellow soft-voiced Glaswegian Stuart Murdoch) to the hushed Belle and Sebastianisms of 2004 sophomore effort Underachievers Please Try Harder and 2006's orchestral coming-out party, Let's Get Out of This Country. For its latest chapter, My Maudlin Career (released on 4AD in April), cursive singer Tracyanne Campbell fully abandons the group's early simple flatteries and effusively seals the deal, conjuring every spurned advance and awkward first kiss in cementing her songs as the chief preservationists of formal, forlorn Brill Building chamber pop. It's instant nostalgia for your imagined romances, its makers the house band for the never-ending high school dance in your head. Papercuts, a dreamy San Francisco outfit whose sound is half Beach House and half Byrds, opens. Tickets $14. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
