Green Goddess chef Chris DeBarr will host a benefit for the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The "Cocktails for the Lighthouse" event features cocktails from Tru Organic Vodka and Gin, courtesy of the restaurant's Exchange Alley neighbors the Pelican Club. Proceeds will benefit the reconstruction of the landmark Canal Lighthouse.
First constructed in the 1890s, the lighthouse at West End Boulevard on Lakeshore Drive is undergoing restoration due to damages it received from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Salvageable pieces of the old lighthouse will be used to help with rebuilding, and the foundation plans to open the renovated structure as an environmental education center that offers programs to visitors and student groups. The lighthouse's maritime museum will feature interactive displays about the site's history and ecology, as well as the hurricanes' impact on the site.
