Cancer Crusaders

The nonprofit volunteer organization Cancer Crusaders last month donated $140,000 to support cancer research at the Louisiana State University Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center and Tulane Cancer Center, members of the Louisiana Cancer Consortium.

The money will be used to create chaired professorships in clinical medicine, which Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center director Dr. Augusto Ochoa says is vital for building programs in translational research, which seeks to shorten the time it takes for laboratory breakthroughs to become new therapies for patients.

Cancer Crusaders, which raises funds to promote cancer research in New Orleans, has collected more than $2 million since it was incorporated in 1978. — Kandace Power Graves
