Chasing the Groove: A New Orleans Funkumentary

Over the first five days of last year's Jazz Fest, director Paul Miller led a crew on a marathon excursion through New Orleans clubs. Miller's gang shot with three cameras and often recorded straight through the clubs' sound boards, trying to capture the experience of the nightclub side of the festival as thoroughly as possible. In Chasing the Groove, Miller documented the vibe of a particularly special Fest. The film not only shows the party buzz of musicians and fans both warmed up after a long day on the Fairgrounds, it also captures the poignant vibe of the post-Katrina reunions and uncertain but triumphant energy that surrounded the first post-K Fest like an electric cloud. The artists caught on tape include Ivan Neville, Papa Grows Funk, the Soul Rebels Brass Band, Coco Robicheaux and many others. All of the profits generated from distribution of the documentary will be donated to organizations helping New Orleans musicians, including the Tipitina's Foundation, the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic and MusiCares. After the one-hour film, a Q&A with director Paul Miller will be led by local filmmaker Charlie Brown. Tickets $6 general admission, $3 3 Ring Circus members. -- Alison Fensterstock
