Calvin Prescott opened Kayla's Restaurant in the Bywater.

Culinary options along St. Claude Avenue continue to increase, but not all dining and drinking spots are budget-friendly. The arrival of Kayla's Restaurant (3036 St. Claude Ave., 504-949-3477) may offer high-quality food for diners watching their budgets. Everything on the menu at Kayla's (yes, everything) is under $6.

"We're just serving up great food at prices that people can really afford," says Calvin Prescott, who named the restaurant after his daughter.

The menu features a stable of 6-inch po-boys, soul food favorites and changing plate-lunch specials, from barbecued pork chops to hot sausage and fried fish.

Kayla's is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Prescott is in the process of getting a liquor license, and the spacious downstairs bar has all the makings of a Bywater crowd-pleaser.
