Fresh ginger root, lemon zest, freshly brewed coffee — these are just a few ingredients used to make rich, flavorful truffles at Bittersweet Confections (5331 Canal Blvd., 484-0780; www.bittersweetconfections.com). A favorite among customers is the Second Line Collection, available year-round, which combines chocolate and bananas Foster.
Each truffle is hand-scooped, shaped and finished with a signature garnish, but this chocoholic boutique also offers other treats, including sugar-free confections. Customers can get their chocolate fix to go or find a sunny spot near a window at one of the shop's bistro tables and linger over hot chocolate, iced or hot coffee or a scoop of gelato.
Cheryl Scripter, confectioner and owner of the shop, emphasizes her use of only fresh local ingredients, small quantities and unique flavors.
"I personally know farmers and dairy producers, so I want to support them," she says. "Fresh, trendy custom packaging to suit your needs" is also part of the product's appeal, says Scripter, who personalizes her sweet treats with special ribbon and boxes for wedding favors and corporate gift-giving. She also has children's birthday parties and adult chocolate tasting parties where everyone leaves with a box of truffles.
Scripter sells her Bittersweet Confections at the Crescent City Farmers Market on Saturdays.
