Christian Scott

Jazz Fest fans may recognize Christian Scott. The talented young trumpeter played in his uncle Donald Harrison's band for years. But Scott is becoming the attraction. His band just played the Playboy Jazz Festival and he had to push back a planned tour in order to appear at the Newport Folk Festival. It's been a busy spring for him as his major label debut, Rewind That, has received critical acclaim and Billboard magazine recognized him as an artist to watch. The album is a mix of mostly original songs that range from trance-like Miles Davisesque compositions, like the opening track "Rewind That," to more funk-driven riffs. On his myspace page (, Scott has posted a jazz cover of "Cissy Strut," reflecting both a freewheeling love of music and that he's very much in touch with his New Orleans roots. Some of his early music lessons came from Guardians of the Flame Mardi Gras Indian Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr., who sang and had him play back the notes and phrasing on the trumpet. Scott credits much of his jazz training to Donald Jr. and NOCCA teachers Clyde Kerr and Kent Jordan. Recently, he's had the opportunity to play with everyone from Eddie Palmieri to Soulive and Brother J from X-Clan. But even that is familiar ground to him. When living in New York, Donald Harrison was neighbors with Biggie Smalls and the two talked about music often. Scott's vision of music also looks beyond genre boundaries. Christian Scott's quintet will open for the longtime experimental funk and jazz duo Stanley Clark and George Duke. Tickets $30. -- Will Coviello
