Christmas on Mars

Flaming Lips fans can share their appreciation for Wayne Coyne's eccentric projects at a screening of his arty film Christmas on Mars, released in November on DVD. Coyne stars as a (anti-Grinch) silent, green alien who intervenes to save Christmas for the Mars space station commanded by Major Syrtis (fellow Lips member Steve Drozd). Strange phenomena overrun the station and are creepier less for plot reasons than the lo-fi effects of Coyne's backyard film studio. This mostly black-and-white space odyssey is more Dali than Kubrick; there are aliens with heads resembling human female genitalia as well as a baby in a bubble, an intergalactic marching band and more strangeness, apparently for strangeness' sake. The film proves it's easier to add strange visual gimmicks to a good rock show than it is to spin those notions into a feature film. At least it's a Christmas tale like no other. Free admission. — Will Coviello
