Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band

8 p.m. Thu., Nov. 20
Republic New Orleans, 828 S. Peters St., 528-8282;

Photo by Autumn deWilde As the leader of the shifting-membership project Bright Eyes, musical wunderkind Conor Oberst helped usher in a new, folk-influenced brand of indie rock in the early part of this century, with intimate songwriting and a lovably boyish, tremulous, wounded-sounding voice. In 2005, the neo-folkie gave the world a glimpse at his array of talent with an ambitious and evocatively titled double-album release — one spare and organic (I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning) and one buzzy and electronic (Digital Ash in a Digital Urn). Oberst, who also has helped break multiple artists (often Bright Eyes collaborators) on the Saddle Creek and Team Love labels, continues to reveal himself as an incredibly diverse and prolific talent. He recorded his latest self-titled release in one month in Mexico with a group of artists calling themselves the Mystic Valley Band. It includes guitar whiz Taylor Hollingsworth, Rilo Kiley drummer Jason Boesel, longtime Saddle Creek sideman Nate Walcott on horns and piano, and others. The exuberant roots-rockers the Felice Brothers and Rig 1 open. $18 in advance, $20 at the door. — Fensterstock
