Credit Card Crunch 

  The national economy has given birth to an onslaught of streamlining commissions and penny-pinching ideas in Louisiana government. As the 2010 legislative session draws closer, lawmakers will begin requesting more information on how much is being spent, and where. Here's a start: The state paid more than $660,000 in credit card fees — not total bills, just in fees — during the past fiscal year. That may sound like small potatoes in a state budget of nearly $30 billion, but no detail will be too small when the administration and lawmakers take out their scalpels in the face of a potentially record-setting, multi-billion-dollar budget shortfall over the next 24 months. — Jeremy Alford
