Crescent City Farmers Market

If a Lenten vow or some other post-Carnival resolution includes eating better, the return of the downtown Crescent City Farmers Market this weekend is coming at just the right time. This original location for the Farmers Market had been suspended since Hurricane Katrina, but its resumption means fresh fruit and vegetables, seafood and meats, baked goods, dairy products and plants and flowers from local farmers and producers are available again downtown. Market Umbrella, the nonprofit parent organization of the markets, had hosted four weekly markets around town prior to Katrina. It resumed its Tuesday market at Uptown Square in November, which the organization says has seen record crowds. (The Saturday market in Gretna has also drawn serious crowds.) Now, vendors and staff have recovered sufficiently from the storm to put on two weekly markets and are returning to the mural-decorated parking lot at Magazine and Girod streets. Opening day features music from Hazel & the Delta Ramblers. -- Ian McNulty
