Cutting Edge Music Business Conference and Roots Music Gathering

Now in its 16th year, the Cutting Edge Music Business Conference gathers industry reps from around the country in New Orleans, SXSW-style, for a weekend of seminars, discussions and presentations aimed at demystifying the music biz. This year's keynote speaker is John Rudolph, CEO of the independent music publisher Bug Music. Other speakers of note include the legendary producer and pianist Jim Dickinson, who has worked with the Rolling Stones, the Replacements and Screamin' Jay Hawkins. The conference comprises a film, interactive media and business workshops and seminars on entertainment law. Also under its umbrella is the annual Roots Music Gathering, which this year will present oral histories of Louisiana legends Rockie Charles and Lionel Ferbos and a special Friday-evening tribute to Ernie and Antoinette K-Doe at the newly opened Peaches Records & Tapes (408 N. Peters St.). Nonagenarian gospel singer Jimmy Carter of the Blind Boys of Alabama will also address attendees. Visit the Web site for a full schedule and list of fees. — Alison Fensterstock
