Dancing at Lughnasa

In Dancing at Lughnasa, an Irish missionary returns home from Africa to the small village where his five unmarried sisters live. Though they already live close to the bone, their lives will be even more hard-pressed as industrialization changes the countryside. Two of the sisters knit gloves for the family's earnings. The play is revealed through the memory of Micheal, a son born out of wedlock to one of the women, and captures the sisters staving off the hard times and the changing outside world through their camaraderie, jokes and dancing. Embellishing the memories and mythologizing them seems to work all the better to provide not just relief but a sense of joy. David Hoover directs Kat Johnston, Angie Joachim, Lisa Picone, Chrissy Garrett, Mandi Turner, Blake Balu, James Yeargain and Luis Q. Barroso. Tickets $12 general admission, $10 seniors, $8 students. -- Will Coviello
