Dave Eggers

At the time A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (2000) was published, writer Dave Eggers was the alternately earnest and ironic darling among emerging literati. But after flirting with high-profile established magazines and publishing houses and pursuing a variety of well-received projects, Eggers concentrated more and more on his own publishing company, a mission to help young writers and engage the minds and talents of young people to get them more involved in community service. He founded McSweeney's, a company that produces books and a Web site ( full of humorous, alternative and offbeat writing. And he's referenced his longtime home of San Francisco (where he long ago launched the short-lived but quirky and bright magazine Might) with another project, 826 Valencia, which works with high school writers and promotes literacy in San Francisco, New York, Chicago and other cities. He's also been a consistent advocate for AmeriCorps, the service program that tries to match educated and enthusiastic recent college grads with community service programs. At NOCCA, he will speak and read from his new novel, What is the What. He'll sign books afterwards. Tickets $15. -- Will Coviello
