David Winkler-Schmit Named Gambit Staff Writer
David Winkler-Schmit has joined Gambit Weekly as a staff writer. Winkler-Schmit has written for Gambit for a number of years as a contributing writer, reporting on a wide range of topics including health and wellness, public education and local literature. As a staff writer, he will continue to focus on these issues as well as others that concern the city's recovery and future.
Originally from Buffalo, N.Y., Winkler-Schmit moved to New Orleans in 1994, and served as children's services coordinator for the New Orleans Public Library. During this time, he contributed articles to The Independent Weekly in Lafayette, City Life Magazine, Gambit Weekly and The Times-Picayune. Following the storm, Winkler-Schmit became a fulltime freelance writer.
"My family and I are in it for the long haul when it comes to New Orleans. For me, there couldn't be a better job than reporting on the rebuilding of my hometown," he says.
