Do I have to exercise for 30 minutes in a row to get fit?

Research shows that moderate-intensity physical activity can be accumulated throughout the day in 10-minute bouts, which can be just as effective as exercising for 30 minutes straight. This can be useful when trying to fit physical activity into a busy schedule.

Exercising two or three times a day can also give your metabolism an extra boost. Every time you exercise, your metabolism rises, allowing you to continue burning fat and calories during and for some time after exercise. Exercising two or three times a day means your metabolism will rise every time you exercise, giving you an added bonus for fat burning.

However, to see results it is still important to get your heart rate into your target heart rate zone. While exercising, you should aim to raise your heart rate to 50-85% of your maximum heart rate. Maximum heart rate varies from person to person, but a good rule of thumb to find yours is to subtract your age from the number 220.

For example, someone 30 years of age would have an average maximum heart rate of 190 beats per minute. Their target heart rate zone during exercise would then be between 50-85% of 190 or 95 to 162 beats per minute.
