Dr. John and the Lower 911

9 p.m. Fri.-Sat., Dec. 26-27

House of Blues, 225 Decatur St., 310-4999;

A two-night Mac attack hits the House of Blues as the good doctor returns home for the holidays — on a wave of triumph. His 2008 album with the Lower 911 band, City That Care Forgot, is nominated for a Grammy award in this year's Best Contemporary Blues Album category. Released nearly three years after his first musical response to the devastation of the 2005 levee failures, the elegiac EP Sipiana Hericane, City That Care Forgot sees the doc ceasing to mourn while mustering righteous anger. The record is a scratchy, nasty platter of boogie funk and also a wry, articulate and explosive expression of fury at the government's inadequate response to the disaster. Never one to pull punches, Dr. John (aka Mac Rebennack) sprinkles the record with invective like these lyrics directed at President Bush: "Say it's a job well done, say it's a job well done/ Then you giggled like a bitch/ And hopped back on Air Force One." Nothing else could have served as finer proof that Rebennack, who has lived outside of New Orleans since the '60s, still has his heart very much in the Crescent City. John Fohl, a frequent Rebennack sideman, opens on Friday. Joe Krown and Walter "Wolfman" Washington open on Saturday. Tickets $25. — Fensterstock
