Elemore Morgan Jr.: Recent Paintings

He worked out in the open, en plein air, and was often seen with his easel set up in a cane field. An accomplished painter and son of an accomplished photographer, Elemore Morgan Jr. was born in Baton Rouge in 1931 and grew up on a family farm. A Korean War veteran and Oxford alumnus, he joined the faculty at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1965. With deft, spontaneous brush strokes he developed an impressionistic Zen-like approach to painting the soft azure and mauve Gulf light over the green fields of Acadiana. Even his recent work in New York bathed that city in a balmy Gulf glow. He underwent heart surgery last month and recently took a turn for the worse. He died last Sunday, May 18. He was a legendary Louisiana artist and teacher. He will be missed. — D. Eric Bookhardt
