With the recording industry's major labels playing the role of General Motors crash-test dummies, longtime sideline-sitters like Mandell look more prescient by the day. The smoke-ringed L.A. singer/songwriter writes mysterious pop-rock albums with mass appeal, but she steadfastly chooses to issue them on the most micro of imprints. Her latest, Artificial Fire, appeared on Zedtone in February. Tickets $5.
