Evert Witte: New Works on Canvas

He's an abstract artist from the Netherlands; a painter of expressionistic visual riddles. In the mid-1990s he came to New Orleans where he met his wife, Sandra Russell Clark, the well-known photographer. They settled in Bay St. Louis and lived happily ever after -- until a certain storm. Now he's showing his paintings at Cole Pratt. What happened in between is noted in a tersely worded statement that, in part, reads: "The storm. The politics. Losing everything you had. Moving to Long Island. Being in limbo. Missing your friends. ... The war. The politicians. The insurance companies. Renovating. Being at home in Brooklyn. ... Contrast. Cartoons. Snow. De Kooning and Pollock around the corner. Surfing the Atlantic. ... Moving back to the Bay." Witte and Clark's return to Bay St. Louis coincided with the opening of this show. -- D. Eric Bookhardt
