Exene Cervenka and the Original Sinners

Punk rock's first lady Exene Cervenka made her name in the late '70s and '80s as frontwoman, along with ex-husband and rock icon in his own right John Doe, for the legendary Los Angeles punk band X. The band's sound stood out as utterly unique even amid a booming West Coast punk scene thanks to lyrics drawn from Exene's poetry, which managed to combine gritty street imagery with a dark, dreamy transcendent quality, and the way her keening, untrained voice entwined with Doe's in an almost bluegrass-style harmony. Her work with her latest project, the Original Sinners, is definitely placed squarely along that trajectory, although more like the Knitters (Doe and Exene's post-X band that explored more countrified sounds) than the manic thunder of X. Their latest album, last year's Sev7en (Nitro Records) contains a cover of the Gun Club's "Ghost on the Highway." If any voice could approximate the effect of the late Jeffrey Lee Pierce's possessed wail, it's Exene's. Tickets $12. -- Alison Fensterstock
